Verland graduated from Butterfield High School in 1948. He began to pursue a dentistry degree at the College of St. Thomas, but left school when he felt a calling to serve in the military. He later moved the store to Hopkins and, ultimately, to Bloomington. He also served on the executive board of four hardware corporations including as Chair on Coast to Coast Hardware and ServiStar Hardware boards. He retired in 1997. Verland was a man of strong faith. He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus for over 50 years. His devotion and love of Christ was passed on to his family whom he loved dearly. He enjoyed traveling with Harriet.
