Donald Kenneth was born December 24 1924. The first of five sons born to Rudolph and Esther Knauer in Austin, Minnesota. Donald attended Columbus Grade School and St. Augustine High School. For a time he worked in the office of the George A Hormel Co. In February of 1943 he volunteered for induction in the US Army, where he served in the 20th Armored Division, The Army Specialized Training Program, The Army Air Force, and finally in the Infantry. He was sent overseas as a rifleman replacement, but had the good fortune to join the 104th Timberwolf Division in Aachen, Germany as a company clerk. A few months later, the war with Germany was over and Donald was returned home for 90 days of R & R. From home he was sent to Camp San Luis Obispo, CA to prepare for assignment to the Pacfic War Zone. The war with Japan ended however, and Donald was honorably discharged and sent home, after 34 months of active duty. Although he returned to the Hormel Co., he decided in the fall of 1946 to attend Austin Junior College. From there he graduated and transferred to the University of Minnesota. While there, he became a member of Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity and in 1949 he graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree. He then was hired by the Owatonna Canning Co. and while working there, he became engaged to Jeanne Livingston of Minneapolis and drove up to see her every weekend. Her father George E. Livingston was the proprietor of Crown Rubber Stamp Co. in downtown Minneapolis. He offered Don the chance to work for him and learn the business, after marrying his daughter on June 10, 1950. Don eventually took over the business and retired at age 65. Don and Jeanne enjoyed 67 years of marriage and had 4 children, Mary, Kathleen, James, and Thomas. Mary and Stan gave him his 1st grandchild, Jeffrey, and Tom and his wife Diane provided him with 2 more grandchildren, Natalie and Angela. All of Don's children, grandchildren, and brothers greatly loved, admired and cherished him. On July 8, 2020 Don joined his beloved wife, his parents, and many friends in eternal life. He is survived by his 4 children, Mary Barthel of Burnsville, MN, Kathy Bryant of Victoria, MN, Jim Knauer of St. Louis Park, MN, and Tom and his wife Diane Knauer of Eden Prairie, MN, as well as by his 3 grandchildren and 4 brothers, Eugene of Loma Linda, CA, Thomas of Broomfield, CO, William of San Juan De Capistrano, CA, and John of Corcoran, MN. His ashes will be interred at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in a private, immediate family, honor guard ceremony. Due to Covid 19, a celebration of Don's life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers a memorial donation may be sent to Sharing and Caring Hands, 525 N 7th St., Mpls., Mn 55405 or any other charity of Donors choice.
