Darlene Della (Birhanzel) Lacey was born and raised in Benson, MN, and was the fourth of eight children born to Fred and Della (Hamann) Birhanzel. She grew up on the family farm, and then went on to nursing school in St. Cloud, MN. She and some of her classmates then started their nursing careers at a children’s hospital in St. Louis, MO.
She married John Lacey on August 12, 1961. They settled in Tullahoma, TN, and starting raising their three children. They moved to their current home in Minnetonka, MN in 1970.
In 1978, she began a long and caring career treating chemically dependent patients at facilities in Chanhassen, Eden Prairie, Minneapolis, and Plymouth, MN. She finally retired from working at Hazelden Betty Ford in March of 2014.
Her retirement years were spent watching her grandchildren grow up, spending time with her numerous friends, traveling, and tending to her many outdoor plants. She also enjoyed serving in many roles at St. Therese parish in Deephaven, MN, including Hospitality Circle, Council of Catholic Women, Book Club, and organizing the Fall Market.
She is preceded in death by her parents, sister June, and brother Jim. She is survived by John, her loving husband of 56 years, siblings Jean (Birhanzel) Grahn, Pat (Birhanzel) Heino, Gayle (Birhanzel) Stelter, Tom Birhanzel, Lonnie Birhanzel, sons Steve (Diane) and Mark (Mary), daughter Michelle (Tom) Feiten and five grandchildren (Eric, Rachel, Robert, Sean, and Hannah).
Mass of Christian Burial 11 AM Thursday (12/28) at the Church of St. Therese of Deephaven, 18323 Minnetonka Blvd. Deephaven. Visitation 5-8 PM Wednesday (12/27) and starting at 10 AM on Thursday both at the CHURCH. Interment Resurrection Cemetery, Shorewood.
